CHAPTER 11
Third Timeâs the Charm?
Lizzie, wait up!â Sarah yelled.
With a sigh, Lizzie slowed down and waited for her friends. She was so heartbroken for Faiyaz. And so embarrassed that sheâd had any part in this.
When everyone caught up to her, Sarah said, âWell, okay. That one didnât work.â Everyone gave her a hard stare.
âI know, I know,â Sarah said. âI feel really bad about this too. But that doesnât mean we should stop trying. We still have one more technique to try on one more couple.â
Lizzie could hardly believe her ears. After failing twiceâand failing so spectacularlyâshe couldnât believe Sarah would think it was a good idea to keep going. Lizzie was about to take a big breath to say what she really thought for once, when Sarahâs eyes lit up as she looked behind Lizzie. âItâs Hakeem,â she loud-whispered. âLetâs do the last technique now!â
Peter and Olive shared a look. Peter said, âSarah, I think weâve done enough for today.â
Lizzie breathed a sigh of relief. Finally. Finally, she wasnât alone in this.
Olive chimed in, âI agree.â
Lizzie said, âMaybe now you could go tell your mom . . . ,â but she stopped short at the look in Sarahâs eyes.
âI canât believe you guys are going to abandon me,â Sarah said. Lizzie couldnât believe it, but she looked sad.
Lizzie shook her head. âWe would never abandon you!â she said.
Sarah shrugged. âIt feels like it. None of you knows how this feels. You have a perfect dad, Lizzie. And Peter and Olive, you have TWO perfect dads. I donât have ANY. Iâve never cared, reallyânot at all. But now that I could have the sheriff as a dad . . . I really want it to happen! Lizzie, I always thought you would support me no matter what. I thought you were a good friend.â
Sarah walked away, her head drooping. Lizzieâs heart was about to break. She couldnât believe she hadnât thought harder about WHY Sarah wanted these schemes to work so much.
She was a bad friend.
A little voice poked at her in her misery. She quieted herself a bit and listened to it. Mr. Samson had said her feelings mattered. And something about this still didnât seem quite right.
She really wished she had known this was how Sarah felt. But . . . messing with other peopleâs lives wasnât the best way to go about getting what she wanted. Faiyazâs face flashed in Lizzieâs mindâno, this was definitely not the right way. And wasnât being a good friend saying things friends might not want to hear?
Her heart racing, she opened her mouth to say something, but Olive started talking. She pushed her glasses up and shifted on her feet. âI guess in an experiment, you donât stop after a couple of tries,â she said, putting her hand on Sarahâs. Sarah gave her a grateful look.
Peter looked at Lizzie just briefly but then said, âYeah. I guess weâd be quitters if we let a couple of fails stop us. And anyway, maybe we still have a chance to make people happy.
